Overall taxonomic organization:

I am using the top-level diatom taxonomy scheme presented in Diatoms: Biology and Morphology of the Species by Round, Crawford and Mann.  I will provide identifications to the best of my ability--generally (though not always) to the Genus level, sometimes to the Species level.  Some Genus and Species identifications come from the Round text but some also come from other references as listed below, and may not agree with Round at every level.  The general plan followed is this:

PHYLUM:  Bacillariophyta (all diatoms)
         CLASS:  Coscinodiscophyceae (centric diatoms)
         CLASS:  Fragilariophyceae (araphid, pennate diatoms)
         CLASS:  Bacillariophyceae (raphid, pennate diatoms)

Processing methods:

The document below (8 pages), which explains my current methods for cleaning diatoms and making permanent slides, was written for a Biotech Lab Methods class in the fall of 2008.  The assignment was intended to provide experience in preparation of Standard Operating Procedures that might be used in a lab, and for me it was a great opportunity (read: motivation) to write down in detail what I had been doing.  The methods were worked out not that long before I wrote the paper; I won't claim that I've been practicing at this for very long!  Anyway, you may find much more detail than you need, but better too much than not enough, I hope.

Since the paper is rather a long document and my web programming skills are rather rudimentary, the easiest way for me to post it was to treat each page as an image.  For you to see and/or print it, you will probably need to download each page to your own computer (right click on the page image, and then click "save"), and then either view or print using Windows Picture and Fax viewer or whatever quick image viewing program you prefer.  If you have problems please contact me and I can send the file to you as a .doc attachment.

Please note that not all of the photos currently on this website were prepared strictly by these methods.  In other words, I've learned something as I've gone along, and let's just say that some of the newer photos are quite a bit better than some of the older ones.  Please appreciate that they all represent a learning experience and enjoy whatever information content they offer!
